This rough-barked relative of A. costata is easily recognised in its native range for its gnarled, picturesque growth. A. floribunda will usually grow to about 20 metres in height, but in the northern area of its range, southern Queensland, it can reach 30 metres. The native reange of Rough-barked apple extends from southern Queensland to Mallacoota, in far-eastern Victoria.
A. floribunda grows in Victoria on many soil types, but will not tolerate waterlogging. It thrives on most sites, including fully coastal sites that have a high sand content. There are few pest and disease problems that are obvious with Rough-barked Apple, and the tree is easily-grown in most streetscapes.
Like A. costata, A. floribunda will not tolerate frost as a young tree. Once it is 1.5m tall or taller, it should be able to tolerate occasional sub-zero temperatures. This is another excellent Angophora to use in urban Australia.
