Banksia ericifolia Burgundy Form will be similar in the landscape to B. ‘Giant Candles’, but with an interesting, showy dark red flower-head. As a selection of B. ericifolia, the Heather-leaved Banksia, it has fine, olive green foliage.
B. ericifolia originates in the sandstone and coastal areas of southern Queensland and New South Wales. As it comes from areas where soils are not very water-retentive, it will not tolerate waterlogging in southern Australia. It will grow ideally in potting/landscape medium where low-phosphorus fertilisers have been used.
Like B. ‘Giant Candles’, this Banksia is propagated by cuttings, giving uniform growth. At Metropolitan Tree Growers, we prune all Banksias to have a single dominant stem, so these plants are suitable for use as small street trees or as display plants.
