Quercus canariensis Climate Oak TM

A selected form of Quercus Canariensis Climate Oak™ (Algerian Oak), chosen from a large seedling-grown trial at Metro Trees, Silvan 3795, Australia, by John Fitzgibbon (Horticulturist/Arborist). This variety features excellent branch structural attachments and atypical foliage. It is budded onto another white oak — a horticultural technique proven effective for over a century — resulting in a superior, faster growth rate compared to seedling-propagated stock. Seed-grown trees of this species previously showed high shrinkage and variable structure and foliage due to the ease with which oaks hybridise; budding overcomes this.

Algerian Oak offers superior heat and drought tolerance and is larger and bolder in most respects than Quercus robur (English Oak). Growing broader than tall, it tends to remain evergreen in the Melbourne climate, becoming semi-deciduous to fully deciduous in colder locations. It is more tolerant of dry, skeletal soils than its close white oak relatives.
